Whitby Park & Ride test run

THE blueprint for how Whitby's long-awaited £2.8m park and ride scheme will work in the town has been revealed for the first time and it is being roadtested today.

Now in its bid to open by next Easter, North Yorkshire County Council has begun compulsory purchase powers to force the sale of the land which will accommodate 450 vehicles, on the junction of the A171 Whitby to Scarborough road and the B1460 near Cross Butts Farm.

Today, on one of the busiest days of the season, a bus carrying councillors, hoteliers and business owners will carry out trial journeys around the town to see if it can meet its target of running every 15 minutes

Nick West, area manager for North Yorkshire County Council Highways department, said: "It will be a major consultation and every household will be getting a document.

"The plans have not just been drawn up from Northallerton. We have tried to involve everyone in Whitby, the key stakeholders.

"There had been some scepticism on Whitby Town Council that the park and ride bus wouldn't get round in time. They are quite keen to see for themselves as we are."

The town centre and Sandsend are to be split into eight controlled residents' parking zones labelled A to H, which are still being finalised and are set to include Mulgrave Road.

For anyone living on a street in one of the zones, long stay parking will be restricted to vehicles with a permit which will cost around £5 per year and the prices will be heavily subsidised.

Their cost will be frozen for three years and will be free for certain groups of people including those on income support.

The permits will allow people to park all day on any street in their zone but residents will not be guaranteed a parking space and short stay parking in the zones will only be permitted using a parking disc for a limited period which will be two hours or less.

Visitors will be able to use the park and ride which will provide free parking but there will be a charge of £1.40 return on the bus for adults and 70p return for children.

They will also be able to park in the town's pay and display car parks or on-street by paying for a ticket from an on-street ticket machine.

The parking controls will generally only apply during the day from 9am to 6pm, seven days a week.
